Arab Politicians and "Uncalculated" Translations

During the recent conflict between Israel and Lebanon (July 2006), some Arab politicians described Hizbullah's military operation of capturing the two Israeli soldiers, which allegedly sparked off the wanton and destructive war against Lebanon, as (mughamarah ghayr mahsubah), literally meaning (uncalculated adventure).

The Arabic term, which is actually a bad translation of the English term (uncalculated risk), uttered by Arab politicians most likely under the influence of English language instructions and or negative translations by inexperienced, sloppy or absent-minded Arabic translators, was back-translated into English as (uncalculated adventure*). Neither the Arabic term in Arabic nor its English translation makes much sense in either language. Yet both the Arabic and English oxymora have been parroted in news reports in Arabic and English language news media, and no one seems to be any the wiser.

By definition, the Arabic word (mughamarah) is a reckless, thoughtless act. Consequently, (mughamarah) and (ghayr mahsubah) do not collocate. By the same token, (uncalculated) and (adventure) do not normally collocate in English either.

This article satirically looks at how Arab politicians use translation-induced expressions that violate the norms and conventions of the Arabic language through adherence to literal translation and or failure to understand the English idiom.

من المخيف في عالم السياسة العربية المعاصرة افتقار معظم السياسيين العرب إلى الحس اللغوي والسليقة اللسانية. وما يقولونه في تصريحاتهم وبياناتهم اليومية المدروسة والعارضة في الصحف والإعلام يكشف عن أمور تظهر في أدناها جهلاً تاماً بأصول اللغة وافتقاراً مدقعاً إلى الفطرة السليمة والمنطق الرشيد والفطنة العربية، وتدل في أقصاها على مجالات قد يؤدي الخوض في متاهاتها في علم الفراسة اللسانية الجنائية (forensic linguistics) إلى الوصول إلى مصادرها التي لا نريد التأمل فيها لما قد تظهره لنا من دلائل وإشارات قد تَدينُهم أو تُذهِبُ ريحَهم. ففي غمرة العدوان الماجن على لبنان واستبسال مقاومته الشريفة الطاهرة وصمودها التاريخي في وجه الآلة الحربية الغاشمة، واستبكاء رجيلاته واستعهار بعضهم الآخر، تعالت صيحات الاحتجاج على المقاومة فنعتوها بـ (المغامرة غير المحسوبة). ورغم ردود الفعل على هذا الوصف من جهات متعددة لم تقصر في الرد والإجابة، فقد مر هذا التعبير على الجميع مرور الكرام ولم يسأل أحدهم جهراً وعلنًا (إذ لا ندري إذا حدث ذلك سرًا) من أين استنبط هؤلاء العباقرة هذا التعبير. ولكننا لو تأملناه قليلاً وأخضعناه للتحليل اللغوي المنطقي لتبادر إلينا السؤال: كيف تكون المغامرة غير محسوبة؟ فالمغامرة مشتقة من الفعل غَامَرَ. وفي الأصل غَامَرَهُ مغامرةً بَاطَشَهُ وَقَاتَلَهُ ولم يبالِ الموتَ. والمُغامرُ والمُغَمِّر: المُلْقِي بنفْسِه في الغمرات المقتحم المهالك. فإذا كانت المغامرة كذلك فهل يكون تصرف من يلقي بنفسه في المهالك في الأصل "محسوبًا" حتى لجأ هؤلاء السياسيون وأبواق إعلامهم إلى تحديد نوع المغامرة بأنها (غير محسوبة) هذه المرة؟
